I decided to make a face book group, where I invited people from our target audience to comment on what they thought of my magazine advert and digipak. So I knew so far what they thought of the research which I was doing...

Here is some of the feedback which I got...

Claire stated:   The photography is really good and it definitely shows the folk genre, overall looks really cool, so it's definitely interesting.

Jasmine Stated: The various angles of the same object is interesting. It coooooooool. It has a folk genre style to it because I class an acoustic guitar to be quite a folk style instrument. I like the font style because it makes it relates more to the genre.

Samantha stated: It’s good. It’s not boring. Yes it’s interesting. I don’t know what a folk genre is. I would switch over the two bottom photos if I had to change anything but I still like it as it is. The rain drops are cool.

I am happy with the feedback which I got, I like the fact that everyone believes that it looks like a folk genre. Everyone said that they liked the way in which I took the photos of the guitar and that it looked acoustic this is really good, as the music video which we are going to make can be seen as acoustic folk.

Audience theory

Within our music video I would like to be able to get an effect across, which makes the reader feel connected to the video. This connection can be connected through emotion. Our music video gives off quite a sad emotion; this in a way could be negative as we don’t want the audience to associate folk music with a sad emotion all the time. This then could relate to how the bobo doll worked. The bobo doll was an experiment, which encouraged anger. Every time someone saw the doll they would get the sudden urge to punch it.

I would like everyone to have a preferred reading to the music video, if possible. Although there could be some people who take an oppositional reading to the video, this could be people who enjoy folk music, although they may not like the age range of who we are making the music video for.

For example - A 70 year old man who enjoys folk music, may not like the video which is made for the age range of 18 - 25 years old, which enjoy folk music too. It could therefore be too modern for the older man.

Performers and Casting

We have decided to use Juliette Webb as our actress. We think that her long blonde hair and her individual style would work really well within the music video for a folk genre. Juliette is also a reliable person, as she works at night, she is around in th day/afternoon time when we would need her most.

We have also decided to use Boris Finck, as he also has a individual look which would work well in the genre which we are producing our video for - folk. Boris will only be used a little within the music video and this will be at the end, located in Friar street.

Costume and Props

We believe that in a folk, winter music video, it is always best for the female to have a bland look about her , eg: not a lot of makeup, plain and fresh faced. , this would then fit in well with the emotion which we want wihtin the video.

In our music video the emotion is sad and lonely; therefore we are not going to dress our actor/tress in bright colourful costumes when it then wouldnt fit in well with the emotion that we want to get across.

We believe the following items are what we are going to need in our music video:

Health and Safety.

Due to the two places that we want to film in - Friar street and a public field in hallow , they are both public places, therefore we don't need permission to film here.
The field in Hallow states this foorpath sign, which allows us access to be allowed within the field. As for Friar street, this is a public place in town where anyone is aloud to be.

Health and safety is important when filming, so I have decided to make a chart to show how we can resolve some of the risks that may occur...

Digipak , more ideas.

Whilst making my digipak for my music video I have come across some new ideas which I have decided to try out...

I have decided to take some photos of a guitar as this senses a folk genre, I thought that it would be a good idea to try taking some photos and see what they look like.

I have also taken some photos of leaves although leaves can come across as being quite un original, I believe that the angle in which I have taken the leaves has made the images look more interesting.

Planning for Digipak schedule.

From using a calender above I have been able to plan my time out well. I am able to see what I have to do and when, this has then given me a good time management skill, which I can then use when planning my music video.

Digipak Idea.

As you can see I have decided to make a rough sketch of what my Digipak may look like. I like the style in which I have made most things within the Digipak black and white. I wish that I had made the part of where the CD goes black and white too, although I do think that having a part of the CD cover in colour could work well too, as long as I use autumn colours , like oranges , yellows , beige's and maybe a few greens, just so that it gives off a country ( folk ) feeling.

On the front outside cover , I have decided that I do really like the half face, staring at you , with a bland emotion on the front I do believe that this works well, I did think about having the person on the front crying , instead of having no emotion. Although, on the other hand I don't know if this would work well, as it may not fit in with the other tiles.

On the back outside cover, I have been looking into whether or not to have leaves creeping over the back of the cover emerging from the left hand side at the bottom. On this cover I have also decided to list some of the tracks which are featured within the CD.

Redundancy and Entropy.

Redundancy is something which is of a high predictability, For example , having then door held open for you, and then thanking the person for doing so , is highly predicted as most people say Thank you. For Communication's to work effectively , redundancy is necessary.
 Another example of high redundancy would be the fact that a racing driver is usually male. So the image below to the left is the more redundant than the one on the right.

The opposite to this is something called Entropy this is when its very different and it contains an unpredictable element.

For Example:  This cats with thumbs photo is entropy as its something which we wouldn't predict to happen.

My music Video ought to be in the middle of redundancy and entropy, as I don't want it to be completely Redundant as it would be too boring and too predictable , and I don't want it to look obvious what could happen next etc.. Although I wouldn't want it be to unpredictable - entropy either, because it will look far to Mis- matched , also the audience will be confused as nothing will link together.
 By having a little bit of each I believe it would work well.

We also have to consider our target audience, and what happens to be their culture, as different people have different cultures. So everyone's Redundant and Entropy views are going to be different. For example. I wouldn't see this everyday due to this isn't my culture, but for Muslims this could be very Redundant for them.

The Pitch to our music Video.

Through the week, we did something called a pitch; this is when we pitch all of our ideas onto something. I decided to pitch my ideas onto sugar as you can see below. By doing my pitch it has helped me and Emily decide what we really wanted to do for our music video. It has really made us think as we literally just jotted down all of our Ideas on to paper and then sketched what we thought.
We came up with plenty of different ideas, but straight away after listening to the song we know what the emotion was that went with our song. We thought that this emotion was sad and depressive. So the kind of things which we thought would go well were things such as,
- Working with Friar Street in Worcester, due to the fact that the buildings down this street are black and white and kind of home in over you, we thought that these looked quite dark and dingy. I thought that this is a creative idea as it’s different; it’s not just a normal brick building.
- We also thought that another creative Idea would be having a close-up of our actress crying with tears falling down her face. We thought that this would work well.
- We also thought that by getting shots of our actress, sat on a hill on her own, connotes that she is lonely , we also thought we would do this when it’s just getting dark.
- Another Idea that we had was for our actress to run her hands through her hair, so that she looks distraught.

In our feedback from showing our pitch, the majority of the people liked our ideas, they thought that our ideas were original and a lot of people commented on how they thought the black and white idea was really good. The majority of the people also said that when all of our ideas come together it will look good. One or two people out of the whole survey said that it wasn’t very original and that we need to make it more original. Overall we believed that our Ideas were thought of well.

We have had some very positive feedback from our audience:

"very achievable and well planned"

"very realistic , good idea for this type of music video"

"Since it is in January , it could be snowing. This would then enhance the mood of the song."

The quote about the snow, is realistic. This could happen in January, although we wouldn't be able to predict the snow, if it did snow , I believe that it would work really well within the music video as it would enhance the mood of the song.

The only negative point we had was " It may not be very original"

We do agree, as yes there are many videos which are going to be similar to ours. Although we are going to make sure that our music video stands out, and that the video is seen in a different light compared to other music videos.

We thought that our target audience was creative and worked well, for the age. Although we should have used more folk type images, as we based our target audience more on rock. We then decided that after our pitch, and after we looked back at some of the feedback that we hadn’t really got the genre right to fit our piece of music, that we had chosen.

We thought that we did well on our health and safety as we did go in depth for the do’s and don’ts when filming, using the camera, etc... Alot of people stated this, we also were creative of the way in which we showed our thoughts on health and safety, instead of just reading it off a PowerPoint or prezi, we stuck them on the board, just so that it was a bit different to everyone else’s.

Overall everyone thought that our idea was achievable and interesting and at the end of the day that is what we are happy with at the moment, we had good feedback overall which has helped us to expand our idea in a bigger and better way.

Music Research 3: Breakeven , The script.

I have decided to analyse , Breakeven, By the script as my last video , for my reseach. I believe that this video is very similar to how I want mine to look at the end of the project.
The first thing that I will be anaylsing is the camera shots and movement, there are many different angles and shots used in this video such as, a closeup shot of the emotion on his face, when he is singing about " A heart never breaks even". This then represents the male as being emotional. We can tell he is finding it hard in this video, just by the expression on his face. We can also see that the girl who he used to be with he was obviously very passionate about her.

Another shot used is when there is a long shot of the male and the female sat in the sunset together. The female gets up and walks away. This connotes that she doesn't want to be sat with him and by the lyrics , " because shes moved on" , this then matches the visuals to the lyrics, its almost as if its telling a story , this could be seen as amplyfying.

Something else which suggests the emotion of this video isn't too good is the fact that the majority of the video is in black and white. This then shows a dull perspective on how the male and female get on now. Compared to when its all in colour when he is having flashbacks of them as a couple.

There are also many over the shoulder shots, as when the male is walking away , so is the female and its alomost like the are using the line of interaction to look back and forth at eachother. There is also an angle which is looking down on to the male , like in the Duffy video, it may be looking down on him because he's feeling sad.

The set varies, some of the set is outside and some is inside, where ever the male seems to be , he looks lonely and sad, unless he is with the female. The lighting is also very dark , which we could then link back to the emotions. We could also link it to one pacific line in the lyrics. The mmale sings, " Im falling to pieces" , The dark colours and the dark atmosphere may indicate that he is starting to crumble and that he can't take anymore.

The music Video seems to me that it is telling a story, about the male and the female breaking up , once again these lyrics link very well to the illusrated images which we come acorss within the music video.

Music research 2: Warwick avenue - Duffy.

The video starts very dark and clouded, with rain spitted on the car window, this may connote that the music video, has a sad emotion rather than a happy emotion.
With a closeup shot the camera then concentrates on the star - Duffy's face. By the expression used on her face, she looks unhappy and fed up.
We then have a short blackout which sticks for about two secounds, this then slightly confuses us, the producer may want us to feel confused, as that may be how Duffy is feeling.
For quite a lot of the video the camera is used by a hand held shot , this is to get the feeling that Duffy is sat in the car as its moving.
As Duffys eyes are filling up with tears this then could display woman as emotional and sensitive.
Throughtout the music video she sings many different lyrics , they all match to what she is doing... e.g the line , " you hurt me bad " , she was obviously hurt by someone and whilst singing that shes crying, this then shows that the visuals do match along side the lyrics.
The colours used in the music video and all very bland, there isn't any happy bubbly colours, they are all plain and very bland.
Half way through the music video a camera shot is used to look down on Duffy as she reaches in her bag for a tissue. This may connote that because the camera is looking down on her that she is feeling down , eg. feeling low and fed up.

1)How do the visuals respond to the music?
The lyrics match well to what is being acted out in the music video, the lyrics which Duffy sings are sad and emotional , some people may see them as even hurtful. It matches well as she looks upset about what she is singing about.

2) To what extent does it follow a narrative?
The story is pretty simple, we can already see that this is about a young woman , who has been hurt due to love , it seems like it could of been a breakup, due to what is said within the lyrics. It also may show that females are not very strong emotionally as she is crying , most of the way through the video.

3) What kind of image is the star presenting?
The star is presenting an Image in which she is sensitive and emotional. It also shows that she is lonely , as she is singing to herself, she is also the only person in the video.

This is overall quite a boring music video, there isn't much to analyse as there isn't much going on, If I were to remake this music video, I would put in more movement. To make sure that the audience is still intrested in watching it.

50 Cent: Candy shop Music Video Analysis...

Within this music video there are a lot of different shots for example, there are many shots which are lower than 50 cent, and looking up on to him. This could show that he is the main person within the music video as the camera is looking up towards him , it could show that he is higher up than everyone else.
There are also some shots which show 50 cent , surrounded by nice things, such as a nice , expensive car, along with a huge house which would of cost a lot of money, this then shows that he has money , and he is very independent, he does what he wants, when he wants.
The lighting which is used in the video, varies, although the main lighting is quite dark and dingy , which shows that the music is quite grimy. This then looks good , as 50 cent has got a very deep and grimy voice, the visuals then match well with the image of what he looks like.
The costume and make up connote that the girls in the music video like to look good, and that they take care of themselves to look good for 50 cent. This could then show that they are trying to impress him.
Close up shots are used when 50 cent is rapping, this could connote that he very powerful and believes in what he does, as he is rapping into the camera. Its almost like he si saying , this is me and this is what I do!

1) How do the visuals respond to the music?
The visuals respond well to what is being acted out in the video. For example , when the lyrics sing " I'm the love Doctor" A woman is then lay on the bed wearing a seductive nurses outfit. This is how the visuals have been fitted to the music, as he is almost acting out what he is saying.

2) To what extent does it follow a narrative?
Its like a dream because its slow motion and everything is perfect for the male , it is almost like a dream to him. At that moment in time nothing looks as if it could go wrong. He has nice clothes , a nice car and a nice house. It shows that he has made it. It also shows that he's independent , and all of this he is in control of, for example, the girls do whatever he wants them to do , and whenever he wants them to do it. Its as if he is the boss.

3) What kind of image is the star presenting?
The star is presenting a way in which , he looks very demanding , strong and powerful. He has no rules and he does what he wants. He also comes across as being very promiscuous , as he has girls all around him , in very little clothes. Although, on another hand , he then wakes up in his car at the end , in a fast food drive through, this then shows that its all a dream, and the the woman is on a higher level in the frame than the male, this may even suggest that woman are higher than men in this situation.

4) How are cinematography, mise en scene, editing used in the video - are there any significant features worthy of comment and why are they used?
The pace is really slow and it seems to zoom in and out on to the woman , there is a pace that is used. So you can get the full effect of what is going on in the mise en scene. The slow movements are used so you can fully connect with what is happening in the video. Its almost like the producer is trying to get across, that males are powerful creatures.

5) The video is amplified , as its how he see's candy, On one hand he states candy being woman in lingerie and on another it states general candy as she is blowing bubblegum. There are two different ways in which the word - candy , can be seen. Star image is also used as the male is brought very close to the camera in some aspects.

Overall we tend to get a vibe of the meaning of the song and the we tend to make up our own idea in our head or what story is being told within the music video. Some theorists, such as Goodwin, believe that music videos should ignore common narrative. As its important in their role of advertising.
The artists voice can be very unique, and we can then form identification in our heads, to what works well with the star image, Roland Barthes theory of the grain of voice can be related to this. He see's the singing voice as an expressive instrument and therefore able to make associations of its own.

Post Production: Digital Technology:

How did the editing go? what would have helped you edit more effectivly? I was happy with my overall editing there was a bit where I could of balanced it out better, but with the time we had that was the best that I could do. Everything else I was happy with, as we got closer to the end of the music video I was confident with editing.

The razour tool was a really good tool for me to use , as we had to cut away certain bits of clips to make sure everything fitted together nicely and that it was all in time, with the soundtrack. I also thought the speed duration was handy as it helped either slow down or fasten up different clips.

Production

What did I learn during this production task?
I have learn't alot through this production, I have learnt how to lip sync things , so that they look good and work. I have also learn't how to make sure things are in better time with eachother and not just randomly placed around. I have also learn't how to slow down something or speed something up, The duration of time.

How did the shoot go? what went wrong? What do you need to do to make sure these things don't happen again?
To be quite honest , nothing really went wrong , there were times when we could of improved the quality our filiming, but we soon corrected that by filming more than needed and then using the better clips. To put together a better music video.

Questions for mysterious girl.

How do the visuals respond to the music?

A: The Visuals respond to the song , in the fact that the lyrics go along with what is being acted.

Production: Digital Technology.

How did you knowledge of production technology develop?
My knowledge of premier pro has increased hugely , I understand how to use the tools in the best way. To try and make my videos flow how I want them too. I also have a better understanding of how to upload a video on to you tube.

What did you learn during the production task?
I learn't lots of different things whilst using premier pro, as I said my understanding got better, but so did my confidence because I knew how to use the software. I became a lot more familiar with the tools and which tool did what. It was a good starter to A2 as it refreshed my memory with the software.

What sort of technology skills would you like to develop during the A2 year?
Within the A2 year , I would like to spend more time on the camera and filming certain shoots. I think its important to know how to do everything in the process. As if for any reason, somebody couldn't do something, you then would know how to do it.

Research and Planning.

Which of the Planning tasks was most useful?
I found the storyboard most useful as you can visually see step by step what comes after what scene. It was a lot easier to look at as it guided me through the video. It also broke it down into smaller shots , so we could see the video in smaller detail.

What kinds of planning do you wish you had done more of?
I wish we had done more planning of what we were going to do , meaning what we going to film, after we had filmed something else... etc.

What Kinds of planning do you expect to be doing in A2 year?
* Story boards.
* Shot lists.
* Look at other music videos and see how they are different from others.

Introduction.

Through out the past two weeks we have been looking at lip syncing. The first thing we did was to pick a song out of the ones selected and work with a partner, to try and grow our confidence on lip syncing and using the software that we can edit it by.
The next thing we did was to get into two groups, and lip sync and act out to the busted video - That's what I go to school for. We had a handful of actors and actresses and used different props for the different things going on. We then edited the video on Première Pro and uploaded it to google.

Tuesday 13 September 2011

Thats what I go to school for - lip sync.

Props

* Books/ folders.
* school uniform.
* Projector in the room.
* High heels.
* Guitars.
* Tennis rackets - Jake.

Research of different CD covers for the genre - Dance.

All of the dance albums all have one pacific thing in common, the bright lighting! This stands out on every dance albums which is around. From bright blues and greens to Vibrant summer colours such as yellows and oranges , you won't be able to escape from the distracting colours.
The images on the front of each album, are most likely to be woman in some form of summer swim wear.
Due to the outfit of the woman and the colours this could show that dance music is a lot more popular in the summer.
The Font style is very much the same on each cover, the font titles look as if they are trying to scream out to the public as they are always very bright and bold.
Its quite simple to identify the genre of music, due to the fact that the cover is vibrant , bold and screams out loud.
You would very much imagine the music to be extremely upbeat and have a very strong bass, with lots of different effects added in to give it a unique zing to each particular song.
